SVS Tax provides specialist advice to accounting and law firms.

We also welcome direct contact from individuals with complex tax issues, or who would like a second opinion.

ACCOUNTING and LAW FIRMS

We offer outsourced specialist tax support and tax training to Accountants and Lawyers.

Our aim is to provide up front estimates for bigger jobs to ensure no surprises to you or your clients.  For smaller jobs we work on a time and cost basis.

SVS Tax only provides tax specialist advice and does not prepare accounts or file tax returns, your clients will remain your clients

SVS Tax will engage with you, unless you specifically request that we engage with your client directly.

INDIVIDUALS

The best time to ask for advice is before you have committed yourself to a course of action.  If that does not happen that can lead to significant tax issues, mostly because taxpayers do not understand their obligations.

We can help, whether you are starting out on a course of action, or if something has gone wrong and you need help fixing it.

Here is what to expect when you make contact:

1. Contact by email

Please email us with us much background information as you can.  We will respond either with a request for further information or a fee estimate, if the information is enough for us to do so.  We mostly do work on an up front fee estimate, where possible, but sometimes that is not possible to do, for example, with a protected IRD dispute.  Please advise us in this email whether the advice is urgently required and the reason for this.

2. Engagement Set up

Once we have reviewed the information you have provided, we will determine the scope of the work and provide an estimate of the costs where it is possible to do so.  Our policy is not to have unpleasant surprises when it comes time for the invoice, and we see this as an important part of building a relationship of trust with our clients.  However, sometimes it is impossible to estimate the fee, and in those cases, we work on a time and cost basis.  We will also give you an estimated timeframe for completing the work.  Often there is a lead time of four weeks, but where issues are urgent, we will deal with these as fast as we can.

Once you have agreed to the scope of the work and the estimate, we will issue an engagement letter containing our terms and conditions.  We may require a retainer of 50% of the estimated fees up front.

3. Tax Advice

The tax advice part of the process can take various different routes.

If your issue is discreet, for example a bright-line tax issue, we will prepare the background facts and send this to you to check.  Once you have confirmed the background facts, we will prepare written advice on how the tax laws apply to your situation.

Sometimes there are multiple issues, for example where there is a group restructure involved.  In this case we will discuss the requirements with you and prepare a PowerPoint slide stack setting out the advice, including structure diagrams and commentary regarding this.

In all cases we will provide you with a draft of the advice to review before we finalise it, to ensure that we have understood the issues correctly.  Once the advice is complete, we will issue it in final form and render an invoice for the remainder of the fee.  Invoices are payable on the 20th of the month following.

If we are providing a second opinion, you can provide this advice to your own accountant or advisor.
